We try to give students a chance at Advanced level courses however this needs to be tempered by realism. Accepting students onto a course with little chance of success is not appropriate. We reserve the right to make the final decision to offer a place to anyone for any course.
The BTEC National Diploma in Business Studies is a two year course that investigates the internal departments of businesses, as well as external factors that can lead to business success or failure.
The BTEC National Diploma is equivalent to two A’ Levels and it is assessed both internally and externally through coursework. There are no external exams to sit, so if coursework brings out the best of your skills and abilities, then this may be very suitable for you. Course work can include written assignment work, team working activities, presentations, financial calculations on spread sheets, and website design. It is very varied. The department staff will assess all of your work and you will be given a final grade, that will be equivalent to A’ Levels and which have UCAS points attached (see below). The Grades range from Distinction*Distinction* (equivalent to A*A* at A’ Level) to Double Pass (equivalent to EE). A number of topics are studied that include:
From September 2012, the school is proposing to offer the BTEC Extended Diploma in Business Studies which is equivalent to three A’Levels, and can be taken alongside another A’ Level. This will mean that you will study six more units than the BTEC National Diploma. Grades awarded for this course range from Treble Distinction* (equivalent to 3A*s) to Treble Pass. Entrance requirements and skills needed
The course is very practical and you will develop independent learning skills through research, planning and organising their work. You may be required to work in a team also. Lessons incorporate a range of activities including case studies, group work, discussions, presentations, role play and using ICT applications
Students should have the equivalent of 5 GCSEs at grade C and above , preferably including maths and English. Although, it is not necessary to have previously studied Business
The department has a successful pass rate for its BTEC Diploma in business. A number of our students achieve a double distinction award and have successfully gained places at university and in employment.
